Improvisation, Composition and Participation

A collaboration commissioned for SITE Santa Fe's '08 Biennial. Malangan was a site-specific composition for 9 piece orchestra, Children's choir and two actors. Performed throughout the Biennial installation, the audience moves through the space to experience different parts of the composition. Recorded live with audience at the premiere. Featuring composers/performers Molly Sturges, Chris Jonas, John Kennedy; with performers Acushla Bastible, John Flax, The Malangan Ensemble and UNM Children's Choir. Here Sturges conducts UNM Children's Chorus in improvisational sections as they respond to other musical materials. Molly collaborated with ensemble on an improvised opera in 2007 as well.
